This study compares recent data on work-related cultural values to those reported by
Hofstede (1980; 1991) and Hofstede and Bond (1988). In 1999-2000 data were collected from
managers in an international banking firm in twelve Asian-Pacific counties, including Australia,
and India. Australia serves as a surrogate for the U. S. Asian countries included are located in
East Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Vietnam, though not included in Hofstede’s earlier
reports, is of interest as a new dynamic in Southeast Asia. Harrison, McKinnon, Wu, and Chow
(2000) reported cultural value scores for North and South Vietnam, south and southwest China,
and Australia.
The purpose of this study was to determine if there were relative changes in work-related
cultural values for countries for which data were available at two time periods. It includes nine
countries in East Asia and India for a total of ten countries.
