This paper is motivated by the observation that gathering and analyzing the behavior
and performance of applications leads to more informed decisions by network managers. In particular, application management can be used to improve network
traffic engineering tasks. In this paper, we investigated the existing/potential network
monitoring frameworks and showed how they can be effectively used to extract application-level information from network applications, running environments
and the communication links. We also identified important application-level information for network management and traffic engineering, which couldn't be easily supported by the simple network-level monitoring information.
