It is very likely that at lower and upper suboptimal
temperatures, a substantial amount of dietary energy
was used to maintain the internal physiology functions, rather than for growth, as has been reported
by Payne, Ridgway and Hamer (1988) and El-Sayed,
El-Ghobashy and Al-Amoudi (1996). The allocation
of energy budget and the absorption of consumed
feed may have also been adversely a¡ected at suboptimal temperatures, as suggested by Elliot (1976a, b).
He found that the absorption of feed by brown trout
decreased with increasing water temperature (Elliot
1976a). He also reported that the feed consumption
and metabolic rates of the ¢sh decreased at tempera
