Airborne particulate matter (PM) polluted in many cities in Indonesia has become seriously because of economic activities, rapid population growth, urbanization, and industrialization. This has been noted as a national problem which caused adverse impact on human health. However, air quality monitoring for PM2.5, especially carbonaceous particles is still limited in Indonesia. Several cities have started periodical monitoring of air quality for fine particulate matter as a national project in Indonesia. Bandung is the capital of West Java province in Indonesia. The city was located on a river basin which surrounded by volcanic mountains. The rapidly increase in population and motor vehicle usage has extremely affected the city’s environmental quality. The traffic jam problem in almost of city sections because of unbalance in number of motor vehicles and available road has caused the air quality deterioration. Bandung's air pollutants are trapped by a combination of surrounding mountains and the city's concave, bowl-like footprint, preventing their release into the upper atmosphere. Particulate matter (PM) is main factor in producing environmental impact and adverse human health effects . WHO indicated that PM contains many chemicals include nitrates, sulfates, elemental and organic carbon. It also has organic compounds such as polycyclic aromatic and hydrocarbons. In addition, biological compounds (e.g. endotoxin and cell fragments) and metals (e.g., iron, copper, nickel, zinc, and vanadium) were found in PM. PM is routinely measured in several countries as present legislation in terms of daily average concentration in the PM10 and PM2.5 fractions. For many cases, samples collected for regulatory purposes are also analyzed to determine their composition. The compositional information is useful not only to assess the concentration of peculiar elements but also to identify PM sources, their emission profile and loading. All these additional features help both in the source characterization and in the assessment of health effects. Therefore this study was study concentration and elemental composition of airborne particulate matter namely PM2.5, PM2.5-10,PM10 and Black Carbon (BC)in Bandung Indonesia.
