Not surprisingly, given the careful consistency with which Pinter constructs his work, if we turn to Davies’ speech rhythms, we find a similar pattern of sharp assertiveness, and unfocused, meandering, and rambling narratives. All three of the Verbal Punctuation exercises set out above would be useful for work on Davies. Applying the tennis or boxing match image to Davies’ speeches would be especially useful in capturing the alternately attacking and concealing rhythms of his speeches.
