You may be enjoying yourself, my dear," she said softly to Daisy. "But we-people in society-don't walk..." she looked embarrassed. "You shouldn't walk around like this," she said quickly.
"Well, everyone should walk," said Daisy. "If I didn't walk, I would feel quite ill."
"You should walk with your mother, dear," cried Mrs Walker. she was now quite angry and upset.
"With my mother?" said Daisy. Suddenly she understood that Mrs Walker was telling her how to behave. "My mother never walks anywhere! And of course," she said, laughing, "I am more than five years old!"
"You're old enough to be more sensible," said Mrs Walker. "You're old enough to be talked about!"
Daisy looked closely at Mrs Walker and smiled. "Talked about? What do you mean?"
"Come into my carriage," said Mrs Walker, "and I'll tell you."
