“Did you see him yesterday?”
“Yes”
“And was he able to speak, or just lying around like a vegetable?”
“We talked about his last meal, his witnesses, what to do with
his personal possessions. Things like that.”
“Is he aware he is going to be executed?”
Nugent burst into laughter. “Of course. He knows perfectly
well w hats going on. He’s not crazy.”
Roxburgh asked about prior meetings with Sam, and Nugent
spared no details. He seemed to remember every word Sam had
uttered in the past two weeks, especially his nasty and threatening
remarks.
