Utilisation of Solids
On page 6 ,we saw that dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) sublimes. In this process, carbon dioxide absorbs heat from the surroundings and changes from the solid to the gaseous state. Water vapour in the surrounding air loses heat to the dry ice and condense to from tiny water droplets, which are seen as dense clouds of smoke-like fog. This makes dry ice suitable for the production of stage smoke. It is used in the entertainment industry to create a dramatic effect (Figure 1.34)
