Levels of Teacher Involvement
in Curriculum Development
Tanner and Tanner (1980) write of teachers and local schools functioning in curriculum development at one of three levels: (1) imitative maintenance, (2) meditative, or
(3) generative. Teachers at level 1 are concerned with maintaining and following the existing curriculum. Teachers at level 2 look at development as refining the existing curriculum. Teachers at level 3 are concerned with improving and changing the curriculum according to the most current knowledge about learning and societal conditions. Tanner and Tanner explained these three levels as follows:
