Si influences water use by reducing cuticular transpiration (Jones and Handreck, 1967; Lewin and Reimann, 1969; Yoshida, 1975).
Reports suggest that, by improving Si nutrition of plants, it may be possible to reduce their internal water stress and there by make them withstand salt stress better (Yoshida, 1975; Matoh et al., 1986; Miyake, 1993).
These results may be applicable to sugarcane and, if demonstrated, they could be used for making salt-affected sugarcane soils more productive.
