The Australian freshwater crayfish farming industry appears to have successfully passed
through the initial experimental and developmental stages. During this period many mistakes
have been made and there have been some significant failures. Nevertheless the industry is
now in the fortunate position where participants can gain from the knowledge and experience
gathered over the past 25 years. Recent developments have proven that crayfish farming
operations can exist as profitable, independent businesses or (in the case of extensive farmdam
systems) as a valuable and productive method of rural diversification. With the recent
development of proven production practices and a more unified and businesslike approach to
crayfish farming, significant growth and expansion of the industry is to be expected.
