The supplementation of animals with glycerin up to 28% DM did not
affect carcass characteristics of the animals in this study, possibly because
glycerin has roughly the same energy content of corn, approximately
1.04 MJ−1. Similar results were found by Mach et al. (2009)
and Bartoň et al. (2013), who found no effect of glycerol inclusion on
carcass characteristics. Another possible explanation for the lack of effect
of glycerin on carcass fatness is that these carcasses have very little
carcass fat. It is possible that feeding pasture depresses stearoyl-CoA
desaturase gene expression, which is correlated with depress adiposity
by antagonizing the potential effects of gluconeogenic precursors
(Smith et al., 2009).
