Tilapia production was compared to water, feed and energy inputs in Table 4. Comparing inputs to outputs, 292 L of water, 1.3 kg feed, and 159 kWh of energy were needed to produce 1 kg increase in tilapia weight. Relative to crops, fish require roughly 3-fold more water, feed, and energy per month to produce 1 kg of product. The energy costs to produce 1 kg of tilapia was on average $12. The market price for whole tilapia sold to restaurants in Baltimore, MD was $8.82/kg, which was less than the energy costs for raising the fish.
