More than half of the parasites found in this study can infect humans and all can cause clinical disease in cats. Most of the parasite species reported in the current study are known to occur in the Caribbean and include hookworms (Ancylostoma and Uncinaria), Eucoleus aerophilus, Mammomonogamus spp., Physaloptera spp., Toxocara spp., coccidian oocysts and cestodes ( Bowman et al., 2002). The high prevalence of cats on St. Kitts and the high parasite infection rates should alert health workers to the possibility of parasitic zoonoses in their patients.
