Consistency of supply is a significant issue associated with a
number of renewable energy resources. Wind and solar energy systems
are subject to both diurnal and short-term variation due to,
for example, gusty periods and clouds [8]. This variation in supply
is not always synchronous with consumer demand, however. In an
effort to overcome the asynchrony associated with these renewable
energy systems and to provide a reliable energy supply which
adequately meets demand fluctuations, renewable energy systems
can be combined with non-renewable energy systems and/or energy
storage technology. This combined system of renewable and
non-renewable energy could accommodate fluctuating consumer
demand with reduced fuel consumption and carbon footprint compared
to the existing energy system [9].
