Fertilization in angiosperms usually initiates the following processes: development of the zygote into an embryo; development of endosperm, a food reserve; development of seed coat from integuments; absorption or disintegration of nucellar tissue, although some plants retain this tissue as a food reserve called perisperm; maturation of the ovary to form a fruit; and, in some species, stimulation of accessory floral parts (e.g. receptacle, sepals, petals) to increase growth for incorporation into the fruiting structure.
Seeds may sometimes develop in the absence of fertilization. Apomixis is a type of reproduction in which an embryo develops
