SCENE 8 - A FACTORY IN MONTREUIL-SUR-MER
SCENE : The COURTYARD of the factory at Montreuil-sur-mer. MADAME VICTURNIEN, a local busybody, enters UC, followed a moment later by MADAME FOREWOMAN, a stem woman who oversees the young women at the factory.
FOREWMAN : Madame Victumien, I have sent for the girl.
VICTURNIEN : Good
FOREWOMAN : How was your trip to paris?
VICTURNIEN : Paris is a sewer, streets littered with riff raff. It's a disgrace. Young women walking the streets, children begging for food. I hardly know what the world has come to.
FOREWMAN : All the more reason to be thankful for our Mayor, Monsieur Madeleine, who tolerates no impropriety among the young women he hires.
VICTURNIEN : Yes, the factory and the streets of Montreuil-sur-mer must be purged of those who would bring us shame.
FOREWMAN : If what you say about the girl is ture~
VICTURNIEN : I have seen the child myself. Cost me thirty-five francs. My niece alerted me to her. Letters back and forth, putting on airs. Everyone knows of the child. Everyone in this factory knows what sort of a woman Mademoiseile Fantine is.
