Chapter 2 explores the literature related to shared and collaborative leadership.
Here I review literature related to collaborative and shared leadership in an effort to
frame the general concepts from the various research perspectives. I am particularly
interested in those researchers who have studied efforts at developing collaborative
leadership. The size or scale of the collaboration is the organizing construct for layout of
the chapter. The chapter starts with a detailed look at a general model of shared
leadership including the tenants of relational theory and the historical bases of shared
leadership. Following this is a review of collaborative leadership that has been explicitly
mutual, starting with the smallest scale of two “co-leaders” and ending with
contemporary large-scale virtual collaboration. Literature about group and inter-agency
collaboration, medium scale collaborations, are covered. Chapter 2 will also explore the
