• Management of pain is important during all stages of treatment including in the emergency
department, during procedures such as dressing changes and after discharge when
complex neuropathic pain syndromes may develop.

• A systematic review was conducted to determine the role of dexmedetomidine (DEX) for
analgo-sedation of burn patients. The authors reported that there is evidence for deeper and
better sedation as well as for prevention of hypertension when using DEX as an adjunct
during burn procedures.

• Although opioids are the mainstay for pain management in burns injury, anticonvulsant
may be used as an adjunct. However, Gabapentin, an anticonvulsant, was found to be
ineffective in managing procedural pain in the immediate post-burn period.
