Field experiments were carried out for two years during 1978–79 and 1979–80 to evaluate the efficiency of selected herbicides in controlling weeds in sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) at the Guneid Sugarcane Research Station, Sudan. Post‐emergence application of Candex (May and Baker Ltd, a formulated mixture of asulam plus atrazine) at 5.6 and 7.3 kg a.i./ha, metribuzin at 2.5 kg a.i./ha and a tank mixture of diuron at 1.5 kg a.i./ha with either metribuzin at 1.0 and 1.3 kg a.i./ha or tebuthiuron at 0.8 kg a.i./ha, gave efficient weed control for most of the first growing season and gave yields comparable to weed‐free control areas. These herbicides were not phytotoxic to the cane variety Co 527.
