The Army way includes “step-by-step,” “talk-through,” and “by the numbers.” I’ve seen each of those used in firearms and, by the way, defensive tactics. Those who can’t recall an example of the “by the numbers” method (used when the movement requires two or more counts) didn’t study under Jeff Cooper. He used the five-count draw: grip-clear-click-smack-look (press). When the number was called, the trainees would execute that move-and that move only-and then await the next number to be called. As proficiency was gained, some numbers dropped out. This happens as fluidity appears.
