Advanced solutions for the integration of
inland waterways and peripheral areas into
door-to-door transport chains would improve
the competitiveness of European intermodal
freight transport. Research has assessed
the potential for tri-modal transport chains
including road, rail and inland waterways,
along corridors between the North and
the South and South-East Europe. The viability
of operating intermodal transport services
in Scandinavian countries has been
demonstrated, in spite of small flows and
sparse population.
