Many companies, and probably the bulk of developed and developing country ruling classes, expect a future that will be broadly similar to today – ‘business as usual’. The expectation is that there will be no major shift in commercial practices, little-altered access to resources, continuing domination by ‘Western democracy’, relative global peace and so forth – a rosy picture that discourages sufficient effort to seek sustainable development (Welford, 2000). In 1992, the UN World Conference on Environment and Development seemed to offer some hope – at least it established regular review meetings. Around the millennium there were some stocktaking exercises, scenario predictions, warnings and advocacy, but little serious, concrete forward thinking. That needs to be remedied.
