Conclusion
When the clinician understands the
meaning of nipple pain to the woman, and
makes use of the range of management
options available, there is rarely a need
to suggest ceasing breastfeeding, unless
that is the mother’s decision.31 By using
this Breastfeeding Pain Reasoning Model,
clinicians can identify the predominant
influences on nipple pain. This enables
them to provide realistic advice to women
and ensure systems are in place to provide
effective support for breastfeeding from
appropriate health professionals and
community resources (Table 2).32
