The reaction with samples of the Fe50Al composition (Fig. 17) is the same as described above. It begins from thermocouple 5 and spreads to the center of the sample. the significant difference compared to the previous processes is the time in which the front of reaction reaches thermocouple 3. This time is much shorter at about 2 s. Simultaneously, the maximum temperature achieved relative to al thermocouples is higher than in the previous configurations and is in the range of 90-120 C. An asymmetric distribution of the maximum temperature is also seen. The highest temperature is reached at thermocouple 4, and thermocouple 2. These results confirm that increased aluminum in the compacts increases the amount of heat generated by the SHS reaction between iron and aluminum.
