Internationally, governments, tax payers, health policy
makers, and indeed Departments/Ministries of
Health, must now consider carefully what is required
by health services of its nurses and how this can be
supported, facilitated and funded. Platitudes regarding
person-centred, dignified, humane care will not be
realized without adequate resourcing. Nursing is a
vital part of such resources. Nursing is not an expendable
cost to the health service – but a crucial element
in care delivery and in the existence of a safe, effective,
humane health service
