Despite the control over metal translocation, Cd uptake was not
restricted by non-inoculated seedlings since the metal concentration
in the root system increased proportionally to the higher Cd
availability in the external soil. Different results were obtained by
Arduini et al. (1996) where even at high Cd-supply, 6-weeks old P.
pinaster seedlings still had control over Cd uptake. In the present
study, the significant increase in Cd concentration in the root system
at 30 mg Cd kg−1 had no effect in root development of noninoculated
seedlings.
