Infection with both cytotoxic
and invasive strains produced severe keratitis; however,
the predominant pathologic response with cytotoxic
strains was corneal edema and the predominant response with
invasive strains was corneal ulceration. A strain that was neither
cytotoxic nor invasive produced minimal keratitis.
The invasive and cytotoxic phenotypes of P. aeruginosa
correspond to distinct genotypes.
