Despite ASEAN's celebration of its 45 years milestone, solid Integration is yet to be achieved or else risky times in the near future are to be experienced, Several member nations taking the chairs had performed their roles too marginally, resulting in the lack of ASEAN's negotiation power, its ability to handle external pressures, and, obviously, the unity among its member nations.
There have been a number of clear examples of this phenomenon:
Brunei, a small country, has played a marginal role in the group; Myanmar, which is newly opened to the outside world democratically, has been closely monitored on its views and actions; Cambodia's facing Its absence in various decisions because of bias and preference. Last but not least, Thailand has been lacking of its voice since Abhisit government. However, Thailand's success in the establishment of a roadmap for ASEAN connectivity is well acknowledged, but, according to the current
fear among Thai decision makers, that, without better direction, Thailand would soon be irrelevant within ASEAN.
