Food and fluid intake
Participants followed a nutritional plan developed and controlled by a sports dietitian to ensure an adequate carbohydrate and fluid intake in the 3 days leading up to, and in the 5 days during, the study. Participants consumed 1 litre of carbohydrateelectrolyte
drink (Gatorade1, Chicago, IL, USA) during each match and 200 ml of Sustagen1 Sport
recovery drink (Mead Johnson and Company,Australia) containing approximately 21 g of protein
and 48 g of carbohydrate during the post-match cool-down. During the tournament, fluid balance
was controlled by monitoring body mass and restoring fluid losses but plasma volume percentage
corrections should be performed in future research.
