Greyhound racing is commonly viewed as the little brother of the racing industry, operating in the shadow of the prestige and fanfare surrounding Thoroughbred racing. Perceptions of greyhound welfare and integrity concerns, and the lower profile nature of owners, trainers and other stakeholders, has somewhat held it back from enjoying the same recognition and reputation of its industry competitors.
Building a clearer vision for success
To secure and grow its position within the industry during a time of changing consumer behaviours and aggressive competitive pressures, Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) engaged GSG to facilitate the development of a five-year strategic plan for the organisation. This plan was to provide GRV with a unified and motivating vision for the organisation, a clear brand position for greyhound racing and a set of detailed actions to help grow the participation, engagement and advocacy of key stakeholder groups.
Establishing a concise and insightful fact base was essential in recognising and understanding the key issues facing GRV in order to focus its strategic direction on the most significant potential road blocks to achieving sustainable success, but also expose a number of opportunities for growth in participation, advocacy and revenue.
Defining the critical capabilities to ensure success
With the foundation of a clear understanding and acknowledgement of the challenges facing the organisation and industry, a co-creation session with GRV management proved to be the pivotal step in focusing the client towards a state of future success. Removed from organisational distractions, participants identified and described success five years from now, and subsequently what GRV must excel at in order for this to become a reality.
Mapping a highly actionable delivery plan
With consensus on ‘what success looks like’, GSG facilitated an iterative action planning process, where specificity was key, and a clear roadmap of initiatives and actions was produced to ensure the future sustainability of the sport and its continued growth.
