During the past decade, economic, social, and environmental changes have significantly affected the lives of Thai people. By 1990, the life expectancy at birth was 66, about ten years shorter than that of developed nations. Thaland is also encountering a rapid demographic and epidemiological transition. from the pretransition infectious and parasitic diseases, to those most characteristic of a post-transition phase, such as chonic and degenerative deseases that affected the growing aged population. Further more, the UNDP's human development index(1991) indicated that Thailands past economic growth has improved the public welfare only modestly, Among developing countries, Thailand was ranked 47th withr respect to its level of human resources development while achieved the 37th posi- tion based on the real GDP per capita.
