Vocabulary:
Stanza: A group of lines in a poem (usually 4).
Rhyme: Repeating syllables in the last word of each line (example: sand and hand, ! wildflower and hour).
Rhythm: How the words sound together.
Metaphor: A comparison between two unlike things (example: “time is money”).
Part 1: Write a poem about graduating from high school.
*Include feelings, objects, and metaphors. Be creative with the way you use language.
*The poem must be 3 stanzas long (12 lines) minimum. It can be longer.
*You must use 3 ordinal numbers in the poem (example: fifth, fourth, sixteenth...). *The poem must be hand written on a standard piece of paper and decorated with six, hand drawn clocks. The hands of each of the clocks must be at these specific times:
1. Half past one
2. Quarter to seven
3. 15:39
4. Quarter past noon
5. 0:01
6. Ten till eleven oʼclock
Part 2: Read your poem in class!
*You will be graded on pronunciation, rhyme, rhythm, and delivery so practice and speak slowly :)
Guidelines:
*You will also be graded on:
1. The content of the poem (write about something meaningful to you).
2. Following instructions.
3. Aesthetics (how the poem looks). Be creative! Make it beautiful!
4. Title. Think of a title that summarizes the poem (DO NOT use “Graduation” as a title).
*Please make this poem a work of art. Take your time to carefully craft the words and background art. Use the example on the next page for inspiration and guidance. *This is an individual project. You may work with your classmates, but every student must submit his or her own, original poem.
*You will be required to read your poem in class for a speaking grade on Thursday, December 18th. This is also when the written part 1 of the midterm project must be finished.
