Unit 2: People
Abigail: Hey Elena! Guess what? I’ve got a new roommate. Her name’s Leah and she is my age.
Elena: What great news! What is she like?
Abigail: Well, she’s very pretty. She’s got big, green eyes and brown, curly hair. She’s very friendly and outgoing. She’s also very smart. She is one of the top students in her class. She helps me a lot with my math class. I’m not very good at math, you know that. We often study together.
Elena: It seems you two get along very well.
Abigail: Yes, we do. We’ve got a lot in common. We both love reading and traveling. At the weekend, when we both have no assignments to do or exams to study for, we will go traveling. Oh, we also spend our free time doing some volunteer work. She’s the kind of girl who loves to live an active life, just like me. She’s great company.
Elena: That’s a good thing to hear. I’m happy for you.
Abigail: What about you? How is everything? I heard that you’ve moved out to live by yourself.
Elena: Well, everything is okay. I mean sometimes I get lonely, but I’m getting used to it.
Abigail: Oh, dear…You know that you can call me anytime you want some company or someone to hang out with, right? Although we go to different schools, we can still find some time to hang out together, right? I’m free on most weekend.
Elena: Thanks a lot, Abigail. I really would like to but now I’m working on a group project and …there’s so much work to do. I’m pretty stressed out lately. But you know what…What gives me stress is neither the work nor the deadline but one of the group members. Oh, Elena…He’s driving me crazy—not just me, actually, but everyone in the group. He is very bossy. He always tells people what to do like he’s some sort of expert and he won’t listen to others’ opinions. It’s very frustrating.
Abigail: Oh no… That must have been awful. Oh, Elena, you look really stressed out... Have you or anyone in the group tried talking to him? Remind him that this is a “group” project and he should listen to others and let him know that the way he act is causing difficulty for others and making this group project less likely to succeed in time.
Elena: No, I haven’t and I don’t know if anyone has tried. Anyway, I think you have got a good point. It’s time that we talk to him.
Abigail: Call me if you ever need an ear. I’m always here for you.
Elena: Thank you, Abigail.
