While we recognise the limitations of measuring low-cost and
differentiated strategies on a continuumbecause of the argument that
both types of strategies can be pursued simultaneously (see for
instance, Cooper, 1996) our approach can be defended on the grounds
that:
… the value chain required for the low cost strategy is qualitatively
different from the value chain required for the differentiation
strategy. The emphasis of the differentiation strategy is on achieving
(even at considerable cost) superior quality and image throughout
the value chain, whereas the emphasis of the low cost strategy is on
the lowering of costs wherever possible (Helms, Dibrell, & Wright,
1997, p. 690).
