› Explain that the goal of pain management is complete relief of the patient’s pain, if possible. Describe the importance of
repeated pain assessment and the necessity of frequent revision of the pain management plan as needed to achieve pain relief
› If the patient will be discharged from the health care facility, provide instructions on adhering to the pain management plan
at home, and explain how the patient and family may contact the health care provider if questions or concerns arise
› Inform patient/family of signs and symptoms that should be reported to the treating clinician, including
• pain that is uncontrolled despite interventions
• side effects of analgesic medications (e.g., constipation during treatment with opioid analgesics)
› Provide written materials to reinforce patient education
