Quinones are considered another group because not all of them are produced by this biosynthetic pathway. On the other hand, carotenoids as a major point of our review are described below. In relation to iridoids, these are found in about 70 families (Capriofilaceae, Rubiaceae, Cornaceae, among others) grouped in some 13 orders. Saffron (Crocus sativus L.) and cape jasmine fruit (Gardenia jasminoids Ellis) are the best-known iridoid-containing plants, but their colors are more importantly influenced by carotenoids.
