Why do we need instructional design in adult education? First, lack of formal training in developing instructional materials and activities can result in activities and materials that do not meet the needs of the learners. For example, it is easy to apply too much or too little structure in the learning process. Too much structure can stifle independent or sophisticated adult learners. Too little frustrates dependent or unsophisticated adult learners. A systematic approach to developing instruction, based on thorough assessments of instructors, content learners, and contexts should result in a balanced approach.
