4) Post-Feminism – A gender perspective
Post feminism in the most simple of terms is life after feminism (first and second waves). Post feminists believe that feminism has been achieved equality amongst the sexes, thus they these individuals see no purpose in continuing feminist practices. According to authors Jane Pilcher and Imelda Wheleman of the textbook Fifty Key Concepts in Gender Studies, post feminism is considered as a different manifestation of feminism, it is not anti feminist perspective but post feminists feel that social equality has been achieved as traditional gender ascriptions have been eradicated (105-106). Pilcher and Wheleman demonstrate the idea that post feminism blurs the borders between genders, enabling both men and women to be viewed as equal within society. According to University of Michigan’s Communication Studies Professor Susan J Douglas, post feminism takes on the idea that progression has been made for women, however, feminism is irrelevant in the twenty first century, as feminism has resulted in many women unhappy, lonely and bitter (Douglas, 2009). Post feminism is an intriguing concept that takes a new perspective on feminism and feminist practices within modern society.
