I am happy to announce a major milestone in the AirAsia journey in the Philippines that began with the creation of Philippines AirAsia (PAA) and now with the acquisition of Zest Airways Inc. The board of directors of AirAsia Zest (AAZ) has appointed Joy Caneba as Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia Zest effective 1 April 2014. Maan Hontiveros, who is the CEO of PAA, is appointed as Chairman of the Board of AAZ effective the same date.
Joy is somebody who has been closely linked to AirAsia in the Philippines for a number of years. She is a lawyer by profession, specializing in corporate legal matters and has been an advisor and counsel to AirAsia in its efforts to enter the Philippines and establish its brand and operations there. She has been the Chief Operations Officer and Accountable Manager as well as a member of the board of director of AAZ since July 2013, as well as Corporate Secretary and Head of Legal & Compliance since May 2013 (and the same for AirAsia Inc. since January 2013). Prior to joining AirAsia Zest she was the external legal counsel advising AirAsia in the acquisition of Zest Airways Inc.
Joy has a degree in Communications Management from the Assumption College of Makati City, Manila, as well a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Santo Tomas also of Manila. She passed her Philippine Bar Examination with flying colours in 2005. After her studies she joined a number of law firms where she specialized in corporate legal matters and was involved in a number of major corporate transactions in the Philippines
Joy’s unique combination of legal training and qualifications, expertise and exposure to the Philippines corporate environment and knowledge of the AirAsia people and business and culture would be a brilliant addition to the existing team in the Philippines. She will work with the AAZ and PAA teams to consolidate our business in the Philippines under one brand, and to successfully navigate the complex regulatory environment of the Philippines and integrate AAZ fully into the AirAsia family. Our plans are to create a single entity in the Philippines through the AAZ branding, and focus our operations in Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) instead of Clark. Joy will address the immediate challenge of making sure we have a merged and consolidated operations in the Philippines, and that everybody from either PAA or AAZ feel they are a critical part of the AirAsia success story in the Philippines regardless of how they became part of the AirAsia family
I would like to wish Joy all the best in her new role. Please give her all the support she needs to be successful in this important task. I would also like to thank Maan for spearheading our entry into the Philippines and for helping us to acquire and integrate Zest Airways into the AirAsia family. And also to all of you whether you are from PAA or from Zest Airways – you are now part of a much bigger and stronger AirAsia presence in the Philippines. Our dreams live on and there is nothing to stop us from being the best airline in the Philippines!
Lots of love
