The boundary between the human fulfillment school and the liberal model offers more fruitful directions for thinking about the responsibility to provide meaningful work. In effect, liberals argue that business has a range of responsi¬bilities derived from such primary goods as autonomy, rationality, and physical and mental health. The range of employee rights and responsibilities that we will survey in chapters 6 and 7 is an admittedly liberal conception of employee rights and employer responsibilities. This list might include such rights as participation (voting), due process, healthy and safe working conditions, fair wages and benefits, training and education, and privacy. Such goods might be said to be primary in the sense that they are necessary for any realistic opportu¬nity to exercise autonomous, rational, and free choice.
