Lei Day began in 1928 and became an official holiday in this U.S. territory in 1929. During those first years the event included the selection of a Lei Day queen and court. Lei Day celebrations has continued through today, with a brief interruption following the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 until the conclusion of World War II.
