Approximately one- half (46.2%, n=319) of women in Sample 1 had experienced sad mood
or loss of interest in their activities for at least two weeks during pregnancy or the
postpartum period. However, only 21.7% of the sample (n=150) sought treatment from a
mental health professional. Few Sample 1 women (14.5%, n=100) used medication for
depression. Although relatively few took advantage of professional mental health services,
many of these women reported favorable (i.e., at least “somewhat helpful”) opinions of both
psychotherapy (95.2%, n=654) and medication (91.0%, n=627) treatments.
