Personal data, sometimes referred to as personally identifiable information (PII) means any information
relating to an identified or identifiable natural person, i.e. a private individual as opposed to a corporate or
other comparable entity. An identifiable person is someone who can be identified directly or indirectly, in
particular by reference to an identification number or the person’s physical, physiological, mental,
economic, cultural or social characteristics. In some types of research where there may be no data records
per se, individuals might also be identifiable because of photographs, video and audio recordings, or other
personal information collected during the research.
