The role play is a conversation which happens after a guided tour. Everyone has enjoyed the tour and they are now very interested and want to ask the tour guide further questions about Thai culture and traditions.
The 4 students are all from different countries – the tour guide is a Thai person. The 3 tourists are fascinated by Thai cultures and ask many questions. When the tour guide gives her reply to the questions the tourists then explain what happens in their country. Here is an example of a conversation.
I noticed that when Thai people greet each other they either lower their heads or stop and put their hands together; what is this called?
Oh this is a very Thai thing; it is called a “why”. We put our hands together and slightly lower our heads. It is a sign of respect for our elders and people of high status.
Interesting. In England we shake hands and sometimes hug older people. I like the Thai way of greeting. I don’t like touching people but we have to show respect with a handshake. I get a lot of colds and sometimes flu in winter and I am sure it is because I am always shaking hands.
Oh in France we have to kiss on each cheek; it is so unhygienic. I really think the Thai way is best.
In Italy we greet with three kisses and always hug each other. Oh! I have another question. Can I leave my shoes on when I visit a friend’s house in Thailand?
Oh no! Never do that! etc. etc.
