Flowers take the form of a scarlet red bowl or cup, which
is roughly hemispherical, with straight sides and a very
slight flare at the tips. The flower is made up of two hairy
sepals and four large, flimsy and orange to red petals,
which usually have a black spot of varying size at the base.
Petals show typical microscopic cisternal structures filled
with a highly active aqueous liquid content. This liquid is
carried up to tip from the base by perfectly arranged helical
parallel tubes along the length of the plant.7–10 Pollen
grains are 30–50mm in length, and gray or pale yellow in
color. The fruit comprises more than 200 small, reniform,
ovoid seeds. Mass production techniques in agriculture
may be easily developed and applied to the cultivation of
P. rhoeas in its proposed role to maintain the large worldwide
demand for an alternate nuclear stain
