Food and competition
T. pectoralis generally feeds on aquatic plants
(Davidson 1975; Indrambarya 1981) although,
according to Edwards (1982), T. pectoralis is an
omnivorous fish, consuming some plants directly
but particularly after some decomposition.
According to Bardach et al. (1972), T. pectoralis
feeds on phytoplankton and zooplankton, as well as
decayed algae and higher plants. In rice fields,
T. pectoralis occupies the lower levels of the aquatic
food chain (Ali 1994), grazing on algae (Ardiwinata
1957; Ali 1994), specifically aufwusch algae
(Heckman 1979), and aquatic macrophytes (Ali
1994).
