Sitting position study
The results of the sitting position study indicate that
there is considerable variation in the location of the
most forward position of the leg of motorcycle riders in
the normal sitting position on a static test rig. The
results also suggest that the location of the buttocks on
the seat is relatively fixed and that the location of the
knee as measured on the test rig is strongly related to
the buttock-knee length. It is possible that there may be
differences between the positions adopted on the static
rig to those adopted when riding on the road, for
example, as a result of leaning forward on the machine
to reduce the wind on the rider. It is not clear whether
this would increase the variation from that on the static
rig or reduce it. Given that postural fixity (remaining in
one position for long periods) is associated with discomfort
it could be expected that riders would move
around during a journey. As the only movement
possible on the motorcycle is a shift in the position of
the buttocks fore and aft along the seat it would be
expected that this would increase the variation of
location of the most forward part of the leg during a
journey.
