An expansion of ANCAP testing of head-on, roadside furniture, and rollover collisions may improve the general safety of the Australian vehicle fleet for these crash types. Indeed, roof strength testing for rollover protection is planned for introduction to ANCAP in 2014 (ANCAP 2011). As discussed previously, whilst head-on collision protection is already tested in ANCAP, IIHS (2009 and 2012b) have identified that vehicles may not perform well once the real-world crash parameters lie outside those tested for. Similarly, IIHS (2009) identified limitations with the crash dummies currently used for pole impact testing, that may affect real world outcomes. Developments in these areas for programs such as ANCAP may assist in improving overall vehicle safety.
