Creating a Welcoming Environment for All in Deco SESA
It is not enough to merely Win Together. At AkzoNobel, our aims are higher and goals broader. And that means we want to win together with a committed workforce that is both diverse and inclusive.
Inculcating a culture of diversity and inclusion is not just a lofty corporate ideal. Indeed, a workforce that takes in talents and skillsets that are consistent with AkzoNobel’s values and ambitions, but disregard differences in gender, backgrounds and experiences is integral to the Decorative Paints SESA achieving leading performances in all business areas.
Already, our efforts at creating a welcoming workplace for one and all are bearing fruits. On the Human Resource front, AkzoNobel has built a reputation for being an equal-opportunity employer that is fair and transparent in our recruitment activities. Internally, in AkzoNobel offices all over the world, including in many places in SESA, we now have an ever-increasing proportion of employees holding fort and doing well in departments and functions previously considered “non-traditional” or “out-of-bounds” for them.
For example, we now have more female colleagues flying the flag in traditionally male-dominated domains such as Sales & Supply Chain. There are also more employees from high-growth markets taking the leap of faith and making the switch to emerging markets, where they continue to excel.
The numbers tell their own stories. As of March this year (2014), our Diversity & Inclusion figures are as below:
• % of female Executives = 18%
• % of Executive from High Growth Markets = 100%
• % of Female Potentials (MM 3 to MM 6) = 24%
• % of Potentials (MM3 to MM6) from High Growth Markets = 100%
These are laudable achievements that should be emulated and replicated in more areas and in higher numbers.
What they also show is that as a Corporate, AkzoNobel has successfully put in place a winning formula and forged an environment where talents of different attributes, aptitudes and backgrounds can work together in one happy, united pool.
But there is so much more to be done if we are to get better. If AkzoNobel is to achieve our strategic ambitions and achieve leading performances in all business areas, then we will need to take the next step in our Diversity & Inclusion journey.
While it is good that we are attracting the right talents to take up different jobs and posts within AkzoNobel, it is imperative that we help every employee broaden their professional horizon and map out their developments in the company.
In short, we want to encourage employees to do the right things and state their views in an open and honest manner. This way, we can then empower them to bring about improvements in their work. If we are able to do that, then we will well and truly be on our way to Winning Together as a diverse, yet cohesive family at Deco SESA.
The Diversity & Inclusion posters of our colleagues that you see displayed in your offices share some of the success stories of our efforts. As we partake of their journeys and experiences, we will also do well to remember, and to abide by the binding principle that has, and continues to bring AkzoNobel much successes: To drive winning performances by breeding a culture and workplace where good ideas can and will soar, regardless of who and where they come from.
